Company History

H. Ripley & Co is an eighty year old family business based in Hailsham, East Sussex. The Company has grown from a single site to operating from five main locations across Kent and East Sussex, with access to a number of smaller sites for use if needed.

The primary business activity has always been scrap metal recycling, developing into Authorised Treatment Facilities (ATFs) for both Waste Electricals and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and End of Life Vehicles (ELVs), waste haulage and international metal and vehicle parts trade and export.

All sites have sought and gained full planning and environmental permissions; previously known as Waste Management Licences (WMLs) now called Environmental Permits, issued and regulated by the Environment Agency. H. Ripley has carried out ELV depollution and dismantling activities for over 20 years, with four of our five sites becoming fully compliant with and gaining ATF status under the ELV Regulations 2003.

Being a family concern of medium size, business activities remain tightly managed. As a result, the company has grown significantly in the past five years but has retained good control of internal processes and day to day activities, attracting professional employees into the company and high profile contracts, such as abandoned vehicle recovery for Kent County Council (KCC) and East Sussex County Council (ESCC). Also becoming active members of the Freight Transport Association (FTA), the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) and the British Metals Recycling Association (BMRA).

To support such expansion the Company has, in the past few years, invested significantly in the information technology necessary to manage the internal processing of waste inputs and outputs and to meet regulatory documentation requirements. The Company also recognises the importance of well trained employees and is happy to support staff in their personal development by recently making The Skills Pledge.
